Renovated 70s bungalow

Problem

The bungalow from the 70s was completely re-insulated and renovated in 2008 (bitumen roof, double-glazed windows, neither ventilation nor air conditioning).

The east- and south-facing windows, which are exposed to the sun, were fitted with pleated blinds or roller blinds to protect against the sun.

Nevertheless, it usually got uncomfortably hot over the summer and the rooms could no longer be cooled down in the long term by ventilation. Air conditioning seemed essential. But a sustainable solution was needed.

Solution

After installing Radi-Cool blinds In the fall, the flat roof was also given a cooling coating made from Radi-Cool membrane.

The roller blind material and roof coating work by means of strong reflection and emission:

Reflecting a large proportion of solar radiation without absorbing heat itself

Minimization of heat build-up on the window and in the roof area

Radiation of existing building heat through emission over the roof area

Result

In the summer of 2022, both measures together were able to prove their effectiveness in a long-term measurement.

Although the summer was the sunniest on record since weather records began, according to the DWD, the temperature in the house was almost always between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius – even when the temperature outside reached 37 degrees. The noticeably reduced heat build-up was accompanied by rapid cooling in sync with the outside air – so there was no longer any need for air conditioning.
