Flat in an unrenovated old building

Problem

The kitchen-diner in an unrenovated old Berlin building is surrounded by a thin outer wall, a wall with two old box-type windows, and a stairwell. And above it all is an uninsulated roof terrace. The consequences were very uncomfortable: in winter, there were always cold feet and shivering, despite setting the heating thermostat to 21-22°C. In summer, on the other hand, home office work in the bedroom was a necessity, because the kitchen-diner under the roof terrace became uncomfortably hot.

Solution

The kitchen-diner was painted with ClimateCoating® ThermoPlus in different colors. The coating serves as a thermal barrier and, in winter, keeps the warmth in the room and the sense of well-being high through various physical effects. In summer, on the other hand, oppressive heat is better kept in the wall and evaporation cooling is created through absorbed humidity.

Result

Since the paint was applied, the kitchen-diner has suddenly become a pleasant place to be. Warm feet and a sense of well-being are now a permanent feature, even though the thermostat has been set back to 18.5°C – and that throughout the whole winter. And in summer, the room is now the coolest place in the apartment, so on hot days, the rented office is gladly left in order to work at a comfortable temperature at home.

The heating bill shows what that actually means:
The consumption data for 2022 was over 25% lower in the living room than in the living room, despite significantly more intensive use and a 33% shorter day reduction in 2022.

This meant a repayment of several hundred euros – despite the massive increase in energy costs.

Usage behavior on standard working days:
Winter 2021/22: Thermostat at 21.5°C, approx. 12 hours daytime reduction to 16 degrees
Winter 2022/23: Thermostat at 18.5°C, approx. 8 hours daytime reduction to 12 degrees

This also shows that a ClimateCoating functional paint increases the feeling of well-being and at the same time saves significant heating energy and heat load. And all this without any technology or major structural measures - simply painting the inside is sufficient.
