That it was high time to rethink heat protection...
... really hit me for the first time when our newly renovated Berlin home suddenly became unbearably hot one summer. I definitely didn't want to solve this problem with technology. Because air conditioners are my worst nightmare!
Since I’ve always been a fan of simple solutions to urgent problems, I started doing some research—and realized that today we rely heavily on increasingly complex technology, yet we’ve forgotten just how many natural physical phenomena we could actually make use of.
How the story of Cool Ants Germany began
Life often doesn't go as planned—and that was the case for me, too.
After many years as a customer and management consultant and a lengthy period of parental leave, I wanted to try something new in my career—something meaningful. In 2015, an unexpected opportunity presented itself: a refugee shelter on our street led to close contact with people from all over the world.
Our son, who was six at the time, was very interested in the home countries of our new acquaintances—and especially in the weather there. The weather app became his constant companion, and his constant questions—“Do you know how hot it is right now in Baghdad, Damascus, or Tehran?”—made it clear to me: Many people are already living with extreme heat stress—and this issue is becoming increasingly important here as well, as I’ve already experienced firsthand at home.
The final push toward a career change came from our second son, whom we adopted as a teenager during that time. Although he grew up in sweltering Iraq with air conditioning, he dislikes it just as much as I do. Together, we looked for other ways to beat the heat. And that’s how the story of Cool Ants Germany began—with a simple Google search: “Cooling without electricity.”
